Hi Giovanna,

I had a chance to chat with Molly and Karen yesterday afternoon and this morning, and as a group there aren’t any concerns with you opting to go the EMBA route instead of PMBA, and there’s no real issue if we needed to change things over from EMBA to PMBA as a worst-case scenario, so we have that “parachute” that we talked about in case things get crazy at some point.  Where thing get really interesting is when I start comparing the numbers, because there is something that I wasn’t thinking of yesterday (more on that in a moment).

You’ll find attached an estimate of the cost of both programs over a 2 year period.  That’s the default timeframe for EMBA so I thought it was the best “apples to apples” comparison, however we can move things around a bit in PMBA if needed and it doesn’t really change the cost. Keep in mind that these are estimates, because tuition usually moves up a tick each year (1-3% is typical) for PMBA, and that’s not included.  Overall, the two programs are similar in cost the first year, however there’s a fairly significant cost difference in year 2, primarily because the PMBA program has one elective and a project class more tuition than the EMBA program.  The overall difference ends up being around $13,000 or so higher for PMBA before scholarship, and around $4500 more after scholarship.  So, EMBA is cheaper, no question.

The part that I wasn’t thinking about yesterday is that the $4500 difference won’t tell the whole story, because the EMBA program includes your books.  So in addition to being $4,500 less in overall cost to the bursar’s office, with EMBA you won’t be buying any books while you’re here, where in PMBA you’ll need to pickup books for all 20 classes.  Its tough to put a firm number on how much that is, but even figuring a low figure like $50 a class, that’s at least another $1,000 in savings.

I’d be happy to chat with you next week if you’d like to make sure that we’ve got everything covered and that we haven’t missed anything in the conversation, but overall I think moving in the EMBA direction might be the best of all worlds on this one.
